While there is nothing wrong with laying out on one of the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana, this is not the only thing to do in the Dominican Republic. The island has tons of gorgeous forests and rivers as well as amazing beaches. Below are three cool things to do on your vacation in addition to laying out and catching some sun.
Hike Around the Waterfalls at Damajaqua Cascades
This is a don't-miss excursion. It's located near Puerto Plata. The site is a national monument. You can hike around a series of twenty-seven waterfalls. Some of them are small and calm enough for you to jump into and swim in. The larger ones are impressive, and you will get a great hike in reaching them at the high altitudes.
Zip-Line over the Rainforest
The Dominican Republic also has beautiful rainforests. You can take a walking tour of them, but an even more adventurous way to see them is to take a zip-lining excursion. You can catch a bus from most major resorts and head to the rainforest. Once you are in the rainforest, you will ascend up high into the canopy. Then you will hook up and zip from one platform to another.
Snorkeling at Punta Cana
Punta Cana isn't just beautiful beaches; it's also a spot to go out and snorkel. The water is calm and crystal clear. Snorkeling is really cool because, unlike with scuba diving, you don't need to take long lessons or learn how to use the cumbersome tanks. You just need the snorkeling mask and fins.
Whitewater Rafting on the Yaque del Norte River
The Yaque del Norte is the largest river in the Dominican Republic. It's a fantastic river with beautiful scenery and really fun whitewater rafting. The river has water rated between class three and class four. This is fast enough to have a good time but not so fast that you will need to wear helmets and need to be super experienced. If you're a first-time rafter, you can always have a guide accompany your group. Like the excursions to the waterfalls, you can get a tour bus to take you to the river head. The river is locate inland, but the whitewater rafting company that you hook up with will provide transport to and from your hotel.
